Unfortunately I don’t like the patterns. I didn’t know boutique meant “eccentric” in American. I thought it meant exclusive, as in everyone would want it, but you can only buy it at an upscale location.

Uh oh! My bad! The pros are that, yes, as another reviewer said, it’s a gorgeously edited book. This earns it one star on its own.

I think the good editing and the quality photography actually makes the cover pattern look better on the cover than it does inside, very disappointing. To say the least, some of the nicest patterns look nicer than the effort put into designing them deserves because the photos are so well taken, for instance the Silk Bow Scarf. It gets another star for a handful of patterns I do like, the argyle lace hat, the ruffled plain talk mittens, the teak bittersweet gauntlets, the pseudo shibori scarf and the sideways grande hat, I think Many of the patterns in this book will once be gazed at by another generation of knitters who will scratch their head thinking WTF?

My favourite pattern is the argyle lace hat for which I bought this book. My least favourite pattern is the half felted bag, looks like a mishapen candy, go ravelry it! Lazy design. Fugly winner is Fawn Earflap Hat. I really didn’t like this book and felt disappointed by the patterns. Maybe some more fashion forward knitters will enjoy them. I would simply urge you to look up pictures of the designs before you make up your mind, because I believe this is truly hit or miss.

However, most of the designs are extremely basic, fancied up with embellishments. I think this would be an excellent book for slightly more advanced beginners or early intermediate knitters, if only to show knitters how they can jazz up a simple pattern. They are hip and trendy with a touch of whimsy. Nothing boring and outdated about any of these patterns and the directions are easy to follow even for the novice knitter.

Many of the garments have unique construction resulting in beautiful and very fashion forward pieces that people will approach you and ask about them or like my sister, just snatch the hat off your head. The latter resulted in my making three of the hats like the one depicted on the cover.

When I saw this book I knew I had to have it and when it got here I was not disappointed. If you Knit and love the old vintage things like I do then go out and grab this book you will not be sorry.

I particularly like the cloche with the twisted band up the side and have knitted several of them. Again, with all American books, the wool thickness can be a bit of a problem so it is always wise to do a tension square before starting the item.

However, once that problem is resolved, the patterns are attractive and unusual. I would highly recommend it. I love this book and most of the designs in it. Just to give an idea of skill level – I only learnt to knit on boxing day Christmas just gone and have already made 4 of the items out of this book.

The instructions are really simple to follow and there’s a great glossary at the back with illustrations which explains each of the stitches in case there’s any you don’t know. I’ve got a few pattern books but this is my favourite – because the designs are so modern and it makes me feel like a ‘proper knitter’ when I’ve finished a project! I’ve knocked a star off because there a couple of things I can’t make because I can’t hold of the notions eg hand-made brass D ring which the author got in the US but I can’t find in the UK.

Not that it’s her fault As it says on the cover of the book, this is about accessories, and it does have that, and a few slightly larger projects.

I bought this mainly to make some hats, and I quite like the look of some of the hats in it. There are some useful patterns, but as with all books containing patterns it’s best if you can look at all of the patterns before buying the book as you can end up with a book with only one useful pattern, for you, that is.
